There is a malicious piece of software that was released over a year ago, that if infected, will cause your computer to lose access to the Internet at 12:01PM on July 9th, 2012. This software was created by International hackers to run an advertising scam and they infected more than 570,000 computers before they were taken down by the FBI last year. Over the past 8 months, the FBI has been controlling this service (through a private company) and has created clean servers to route users that were infected. As of July 9th, these servers will be taken offline and anyone routing through them will not have access to anything queried on the Internet. This software can infect both Windows and Mac computers. It is also capable of changing Home or Small Office Routers if the default username and password has not been changed.
This is a real concern because most people did not even know that this was a problem in the first place. The FBI believes that there are over 45,000 computers still infected in the United States alone. Since this is a growing concern among everyone in the Internet community it is very important that we look at our computers and check to see if they have been infected. This is another reason that it is so important for everyone to keep up with their Antivirus subscriptions.
Here is a link to the site put up by the U.S. Government to check your computers to make sure they are not infected.
